Birthdays in Perspective

December 30, 2013
This year on my birthday, I get to have a taste of what my mom, Amy Dupras Granger, did for me 22 years ago. Being pregnant has been wonderful but way harder than I thought. I know I can't change the concept of birthdays totally but I really thing we should be celebrate the women who have given birth and call it delivery day. Anyway, thanks mom for having me. Thanks for throwing up so many times, out growing all your clothes, the heat flashes, the cravings and aversions, the tiny bladder annoyances, the stretch marks, and especially the pelvic pain that is currently causing me to waddle more. I'm sure there's more but I haven't gotten there yet. Love you mom!

Charles Buddy Granger: Was a pleasure

Crummy Checkup

December 24, 2013
I wouldn't mind so much that my ob appt is running 40 min late except Nathan Rusch just had to leave for work and now I'm here by myself. I hate going to these appts by myself cuz it makes it seem like my husband doesn't care to be here and I may not remember all the questions I have or remember all the information they give me. I'm kinda pissed.

Amy Dupras Granger: Hmmmm. Oh well. I wonder why the doc was late? Hopefully she or he helped someone else have a better day.
Tamra West: For future reference, the two of you could write down the questions you have beforehand so if he has to go to work, you still know what you want to ask.
Cheryl Solomon Collins: That's pretty amazing he has been at all! My husbands job wasn't so that he could! But most of us sitting there were by ourselves! So chin up you will be ok!!!
Wendy Camarena Paulukaitis: Don't be upset. It is not worth it. You know your husband cares and that is enough. Smile!
Lisa Cornish Kotter: I only ever cared if my husband came when we found out the gender.
Emily Beth Rusch: I love that Nathan wants and tries to be at every appointment. Turns out the patient before me had gone into labor and so I understand that she took priority. I hope they would do the same for me. It was just frustrating that we had made an effort for Nathan to be there and he was but it just didn't work out. Maybe I will care less about him being at these appointments for future children but for now, I love the support. I also happened to love the midwife I met today and she is currently my favorite so that helped to sway my disappointment.
Jon Allen: Merry Christmas, Emily Rusch. We love you.
Melissa Jensen Allen: I know the feeling!

26 Weeks Update

December 23, 2013
26 weeks 2 days prego! Only 5 days till third trimester. I'm starting to feel big. My balance has definitely shifted to where I have to push myself up when standing up. My pelvis started hurting today as if someone was pushing on a bruise. Yay for new symptoms. Also my heart burn has started earlier in the day around 12 so yay for more tums. I might do pepsid if it gets worse. I also am starting to get little headaches mostly in the evening. My belly button is completely flat and I can push it out in a funny way when I flex my belly. I did puke around 1:30 last which was the first time in months but I think it was something I ate. I'm excited for our child birth and preparation class on January seventh and I really think it will all become so real then. Last think I want to emphasize is that Nathan has been utterly amazing. I could not ask for a more considerate or helpful husband. No request is ever too much for him. I hope you guys enjoy these posts and sorry that I forget to do them as frequently as I'd like. Merry Christmas y'all.

Best Compliment Ever

December 22, 2013
Yesterday, after having a very rough day, the female cashier at Walmart said to me, "you are the most gorgeous pregnant woman I have ever seen." I probably would have cried had I not been so wrapped up in my stress. Mind you, I also had not showered yesterday, had my hair in a messy pony tail, was wearing Nathan's t shirt and sweatpants, and had no make up on. I think I'll just cling on to that glory moment a little while longer.

Emily Rusch: That's the sweetest. And you are pretty stunning whether you're showered or not!
Ginger Faulk: She was seeing the natural beauty in you.
Martha Mooney Granger: Sometimes God finds ways to give you a spiritual hug
Wendy Camarena Paulukaitis: That is the nicest thing I have ever heard, especially that it happened at Walmart. I love this. Glad it happened to you!!!!
Jon Allen: Martha Pressley said it all. What a beautiful tender mercy. It's indicative to me of two things; 1) God loves you so very much and is mindful of your struggles and 2) it is important to follow the gentle promptings we receive so we can be His angels of mercy. I want to hug that cashier!

Baby Dental Coverage?!?

December 19, 2013
So I did a lot of looking for pediatricians and my insurance today but my favorite part was when the insurance agent told me how much dental coverage would be for baby Addison... Cuz her gums might get cavities or something right?? But on a serious note.... when do children need dental coverage and/or start going to the dentist? I know that you can start brushing their teeth before they go to the dentist but I definitely want to avoid having any kids with a dental phobia.
Brea Echard: A dental assistant I know said about 4. I nannied a girl that went at 3
Brittany Goodyear: I've read at one year. Savannah's doctor suggested at 2. I'm thinking 3 or 4.
Krista Mullins: Yeah 3 or 4. Babies most certainly do not need dental coverage...
Jessica Jones Marsaw: My girls see a pediatric dentist and their office recommends starting at 18 mo., which is what we have done.
Tabitha Weiler Armstrong: I took Adam when he was 3 and Hannah when she was 2. Adam definitely had a better first experience.
Shauna Baang: I started taking my kids between 12-18 months
Braden Hansen: We haven't put Macie on yet. Babies don't have teeth for a while. I am glad we haven't wasted the money.
Tamra West: Tristan didn't see a dentist until he was 3. Gavin started at 2. I would recommend starting at 2. Tristan is still apprehensive about the dentist at 6.
Sarah Latchaw: Fiona went at 3. She was fantastic. I have brushed my kids teeth as soon as they start to get them. Just with water at first and then with the baby toothpaste and then with regular toothpaste when they can spit. It's a beautiful thing. Jackson knows he gets his teeth brushed before bath time. He says teeth and then points to his toothbrush. He's only 16 months old. It's exciting.
Shauna Mosher: This is a good question. We chose to wait to take Owen to the dentist when he was almost 4. When I called them they said they do a very light cleaning the first time just so the kids don't get scared and that they will try and do xrays but even after waiting till 4 they were still not able to get useful pictures. Owen loved going to the children's dentist and they are so sweet to kids. He would be fine going back with no fears. As far as oral care goes, I started with both as soon as they were born. I rubbed a damp cloth along their gums at night after their last feeding. I kept using the cloth until they got 4 or so teeth. The earlier you start the more accustom they become to having their teeth cleaned. Andy loves brushing his teeth too! I know babies who nurse don't get the flouride in water that babies who bottle feed get. I really don't know if this makes a difference but its something to note.
Shauna Mosher: Oh, something else I forgot about is bottle rot. You probably know about this but I bet this is why baby dental insurance is what it is. By the time babies get teeth they are usually sleeping through the night so they don't need a midnight feeding but on the off chance that they do, its important to clean them then too. And it can be a really bad idea to give babies juice or milk in their crib for naps or at night because it rots their teeth like nothing else. I know of a guy who's daughter had to get caps on her teeth when she was 2 because of that.

The Search for a Pediatrician Begins

December 19, 2013
Well, I'm starting the search for pediatricians for baby Addison in the Lilburn area. I think I can go in and meet the doctor or something like that right? We will have Assurant coverage so I have found a list of in network but does anyone have any recommendations that can narrow my search??
Brittany Goodyear: I love Dr. Duffy at Gwinnett Pediatrics and Adolescents Medicine. They're in Lawrenceville if that's not too far for you.
Emily Beth Rusch: That's not too far at all and they are on the list! I'm going to give them a call to see what their new baby policies are. Nathan also suggested Dr. Tenenbaum in stone mtn which is who he saw as a kid. He is also in network but they don't have a "meet and greet" option.
Amy Dupras Granger: Remember to ask for their policies on infant vaccines with respect to which ones are optional and which are mandatory. And remember you are Mama Bear and it's your cub:D
Brittany Goodyear: I've seen one other doctor there besides Dr. Duffy and don't remember his name but I liked him as well. The whole staff there has been very good to us.
Sarah Latchaw: Dr vijay aorta at Lilburn pediatrics. She is amazing. And so is the other doctor dr. Carr. Huge fans right here. They are on lawrenceville highway across from Home Depot.
Emily Beth Rusch: Thanks Sarah Latchaw, those doctors are also in network! I'm excited to have so many options!

School + Pregnancy = BUSY

Serenity Anderson: I feel exhausted reading this!
Emily Beth Rusch: I could kill for a nap right now myself... but too much studying needs to be done...
Tamra West: 2 A's down and 2 to go for me.
Amy Dupras Granger: After your finals, let the Christmas baking BEGIN!
Wendy Camarena Paulukaitis: I had James 3 weeks before finals. I took one of my finals writing with one hand and rocking the stroller with the other so he would not cry. Fun times! He went to two more semesters of school with my husband and I. When we graduated we got him a cap and gown and he walked with. We even got our picture in the paper. Good luck!!!
Emily Beth Rusch: That's awesome Wendy Camarena Paulukaitis! Did you go to byu? I can see them being more baby friendly there. I will only have 2 semesters left after Addison comes and am not sure where she will need to be during classes in the fall and following spring.
Wendy Camarena Paulukaitis: I was at BYU. I had some teachers let me take him and others who would not. Adam took him and I also had a friend who watched him for one of my classes. She sat outside the classroom with him. He was great until he was about 5 months. Before that he just slept through everything. You may find someone who can watch her while your in class on campus. That way if you plan to nurse it is easier on you. If you are lucky she will nurse and use the bottle with no problem. James did that for us from day one. Find out what resources you have at school. Like where to nurse and which teachers will bring her. What classes would be better to take in which semester, etc. It was rough, but we got through it.

22 1/2 Weeks Update

November 27, 2013
22 1/2 week update! Sorry I haven't posted in a while, school has been crazy. In the past couple weeks I have developed some serious prego brain. Moment highlights include trying to get in my car via the passenger side, pouring my cereal in a cup, walking an empty cart to my car after shopping, speaking in future tense about the past, and general forgetfulness. My belly button is also looking very weird lately when I'm standing. Sorta an outy on top with extreme flatness at the bottom. I feel like I'm going to have to make more room when I try to squeeze between stuff now. I seem to push my self up with my hands a little more than before. I have to relieve my bladder more frequently, and when I do, my belly hurts as my organs shift to find a better space. I can feel Addison kick frequently now. I wish I didn't have maternity acne but apparently I'm still glowing according to some people. I am so excited for this semester to be over so I can feel that much closer to my due date.

Maternity Coat Issues

November 14, 2013

Anyone know where I can find a decently priced maternity coat? I'm talking heavier than sweat shirt weight. They have one at motherhood maternity but its $90. I know I could just get a giant non-maternity coat... but I would rather not.
Wendy Camarena Paulukaitis: If you are planning on more kids you could invest in one that you may use in the future. I just bought an XL jacket when I had my first. I still use it. I need to get it out of storage because it is cold! You could get one that has tie buttons on the side that can be taken in or out as you grow.
Emily Beth Rusch: I found one on H&M Maternity online that we are gonna order and see if it works for $60. There are just no maternity shops around here except 2 and there was only one jacket I found there for $90 and it wasn't very cute. Most online are closer to $200. I have been wearing Nathan's hoodies lately which fit fine but I just really prefer to wear things that fit my shape and don't make me look like I just thro on my husband's clothes daily because I'm lazy. I'm not sure what you mean by the tie button jackets. I understand the concept but just don't remember ever seeing that style.
Michelle Granger Moose: eBay maybe
Sarah Latchaw: And target! They have some really cute inexpensive stuff.
Emily Beth Rusch: I looked there for coats too, no success.
Sarah Latchaw: You could also try gap maternity at Lenox. Call before you go or kid to kid has a maternity section and the Salvation Army on venture drive does too. Both have a pretty good selection. You can call the kid consignment stores before you go.

Shue Casillas: Old Navy!
Serenity Anderson: Try online with old navy
Emily Beth Rusch: I looked online and even went to the old navy maternity in norcross. They got nothin. Gap doesn't have anything online either.
Chelsea Yancey: I would try Burlington Coat Factory. Good luck and I hope you stay warm.
Jelaire Womble: Ross, Craigslist , kids to kids
Emily Beth Rusch: Although Burington did not have any maternity specific coats, that have a GREAT selection of tops and jeans for really low prices  Chelsea Yancey.

20 Weeks Update

November 12, 2013
20 week update! It's a girl!! AND I'm half way to my due date! The gender reveal was so exciting this week! There is a video on my time line as well as ultra sound pictures if you missed it. Her name will be Addison River Rusch. As far as how we have been feeling, overall great. I definitely feel her move frequently now. My appetite has also sky rocketed but my weight gain is slowing catching up to being on track. I did have to exile most of my wardrobe this week which made shopping for maternity with my mom and sister a lot more fun. Everyone seems to be able to see plainly that I'm pregnant now, unless I'm wearing a big hoodie. FYI, I take no offense to people touching my belly so feel free to ask but it will be a few more weeks till Addison can kick hard enough to feel from the outside. Now that i have some of the big milestones down, I feel like I'm just waiting to get huge and uncomfortable. I already have to pee more frequently but I still make it through the night usually. I also completed a registry at babyies r us this morning. Looks like a play pen will suit our space better than a crib right now. Very excited!

Ultrasound Pictures

November 9, 2013
Addison River Rusch

It's amazing to see which bones have hardened completely and which ones are more similar to cartilage. I believe the brighter, whiter lines are the hardened bones. — with Nathan Rusch.

I have no idea where the lips and nose are supposed to be in this picture. — with Nathan Rusch.

Krista Mullins: Right in the middle, you can see her 2 nostrils and her lips right next to it, to the right. It's like you're looking up at her!
Emily Beth Rusch: You will have to help me see it next time I see you lol
Krista Mullins: If you draw a line down from the 03 and the RU (in Rusch) you'll see her 2 nostrils, one on top of the other (she's sideways)
Emily Beth Rusch: I see it!

The tech told us that she was looking for an open hand which can be challenging to catch with an U/S. I said, "oh to count the fingers?" She told me that actually, an open hand can eliminate up to about 50 or more diseases that a child may be born with. I'm so grateful for this open hand and the 5 fingers I see! — with Nathan Rusch.

I just realized this is a thumb sucking picture!! — with Nathan Rusch.

At first, to me this looks like a head on the right with legs to the left. Goes to show I shouldn't read ultrasounds! Maybe the brighter line is supposed to be the upper arm and the head looking shape is just something else.... — with Nathan Rusch.
These are creepy. The ultrasound tech kept showing us these ones and they sorta scare me.... — with Nathan Rusch.

I think those are fingers from the right hand under the chin. — with Nathan Rusch.

Middle of Week 19 Update

November 5, 2013

Middle of week 19 update! I wouldn't normally do this but I am so so excited to find out if baby Rusch is a girl or boy on Saturday! We already have first names picked too so I can get rid of the "baby Rusch" cover up. Also, I felt 2 distinct kicks this morning below my belly button!! They were right in a row and so I was hoping it would be hiccups so I could savor the moment a little longer but oh well. Also, I slipped this morning on my efforts to not throw up anymore. I'm so glad though that the majority of that is over! I think I just coughed to hard and gagged myself this time. Overall though, I'm feeling so excited today!!

Pregos Should Not be Compared with Grizzly Bears

Nathan Rusch

Nathan Rusch: Mark. I'm not sure what your thoughts are. But we are totally joking and not being serious at all.
Nathan Rusch: And I can say that my wife treats me great. Like the bronze god that I am. Lol

17 Weeks Update

October 21, 2013
17 week update (a few days late again)! Only threw up once last week! Also only took one anti-nausea pill (windy roads to Elijah). Hardly any cough anymore which is great. I even think I felt a couple rolling movements in my belly . I'm still avoiding meat when I can but gaining a couple lbs despite it! Also my bump is getting a little in the way, obviously not much but I just notice it when I pick something up off the floor and that sort of thing. Finally loving the prego life!

16 Weeks Update

October 12, 2013
16 week update. I have felt a lot better this week. I love sleeping in and not being woken up by my bladder. I don't get car sick anymore. I only threw up twice this week and took 2 anti nausea pills which is a great improvement but I did almost pass out at school on Thursday. I still have a cough but it's slowly getting better. I'm definitely showing now and finding I have a more limited wardrobe. Shirt length is my main problem. I'm super started to feel the baby move and kick in the next month!

I've been wearing t-shirts most of the time, partially cuz I have 2 exercise classes at school and partially cuz most my other stuff I bought in HS and it definitely doesn't fit, and I was noticing yesterday that my shirt was kinda tight and uncomfy. I could just graduate to Nathan's t-shirts but I don't think he would prefer that.
Camden Fordham Inman: I didn't really get maternity clothes until the later end of my second trimester. I went to goodwill and got a lot of empire waist shirts and dresses and skirts that have a stretchy waist band. I wore lots of leggings and gouchos.  And t-shirts and gym shorts and sweats. I didn't want to buy materinty clothes brand new so I waited until I absolutely needed them and then happened to find someone that had some they just finished using.
Krista Mullins: No shame in maternity clothes! And seriously, after a kid or two you'll kick yourself for holding out. No one is going to give you a trophy, just wear what is MADE for your body at this time in your life!
Krista Mullins: You'll be surprised how cute maternity stuff is these days anyways. And the comfort will astound you!
Sarah Latchaw: I get mine out by month 4. I love my comfy clothes. You will wish you did it sooner. Rock that baby bump like it's your business.
Krista Mullins: And if it helps, you can think of it as an investment because unfortunately, at least for me, those maternity clothes become a necessity much sooner come the next baby...
Emily Beth Rusch: Oh I totally love maternity clothes! I'm just trying to hold out for financial reasons. Tires for my car this month weren't cheap
Tina Marie Rusch: Seriously, one day you will wake up and wish you had them! They are soooo comfy! Maxi dresses were my fave, and not even maternity ones. Target has them cheap.
Krista Mullins: I always have CRAZY good luck at consignment sales. They may be through this fall.... not sure, but Kid to Kid is a maternity/kids consignment that has good stuff usually. I will have to pull mine out and see if I have any I can part with.
Krista Mullins: *consignment STORE, sorry
Sarah Latchaw: Also eBay.  or if you go to the Salvation Army on venture drive they have cute cheap stuff from old navy and motherhood. Or if you find some jeans you want turned into maternity pants let me know I have a friend whose mom does that;) I actually found a bunch of mine on craigslist at someone's house in buck head. She did all the hard wok finding the stuff and I got a deal since she was done having kids:)
Jennifer Wallace Wells: You need a Bella band! I never had to buy maternity pants!
Emily Beth Rusch: I got 2 of those early on but I hate that my jeans button showed through and I was constantly adjusting it
Tabitha Weiler Armstrong: I'll pull mine back out and put them in my trunk. We can meet up after stake conference on Sunday.
Emily Beth Rusch: That sounds amazing tabitha! Thanks a ton!!!
Tabitha Weiler Armstrong: I also have some Preggy Pops you can have. They didn't do anything for me, but maybe they will for you--worth a try anyway.
Camden Fordham Inman: GOODWILL!! That's what I did.
Emily Beth Rusch: Camden Fordham Inman, I love you but buying clothes at goodwill drives me crazy. I hate the hunt that is so disorganized and trying to find my size including things long enough for me. I will resort to it if need be but for now, it's at the bottom of my list.
Camden Fordham Inman: Lol.  I completely understand.  that makes sense.  It is a search everytime, which sucks, but to me it's worth the possiblity of coming across a couple of great finds for real cheap.  lol. I also asked around the ward to see if anyone was giving some away, but it looks like lots of people here are willing to help you out!
Wendy Camarena Paulukaitis: My pants usually fit until the last month. It is my shirts that I need to buy. Buying the half shirts work.https://www.etsy.com/.../maternity-belly-band-pregnancy...
Wendy Camarena Paulukaitis: This is an example. I wear mine under my shirts to give my shirts length. I would also buy some clothes that are nice and good quality. You will probably do it again. Buy them as you need them. You never know how your body will grow. You may be huge or have just a tiny bump. Look around online and you can find good deals. If you want to try stuff on just to see go to one of the pregnancy stores. They have bumps you can try on with the clothes. Have fun with it.
Chelsea Johnston: I've already switched to almost completely maternity clothes (minus like basketball shorts, sweats, and tshirts) because it was getting super uncomfortable to try and squeeze into regular clothes. At this point, your baby will start growing rapidly. Like an inch a week I believe.

15 Weeks Update

October 7, 2013

Well I'm a couple days late in posting my 15 week update but here it is. Unfortunately I have no belly picture to post cuz I'm lazy and there's really been no amazing belly growth progress. I lost 3lbs last week (obviously not on purpose) but only got sick 3 times. I'm not exactly sure why I have lost weight. I haven't let myself go hungry and I help myself to desert but it may have to do with having very little interest in meat. I still have a cough and if it's not gone by Saturday, Nathan has mandated that I'm going to the doctor again. I'm not sure there's much else to report. Just livin the life of a prego woman.

Marcy Howard: don't fret...I weighed 109 at my first doctors appointment w/dale, gained a little, lost more....but He turned out fine...its fairly normal.  Its the little body inside you that sucks up all the nutrition.
Chelsea Yancey: I find it pretty normal to lost a couple pounds early in your pregnancy.
Emily Beth Rusch: I wouldn't find it abnormal if I was still in my first trimester but from what I have read, I should have gained 2-3 in first trimester ideally and a lb a week during second trimester but overall I'm down 3. I would understand it more also if I was having a hard time keeping food down but my appetite has been normal and I haven't gotten sick after eating. I just want to make sure that if my body needs more food, but doesn't want it, I start trying a little harder.
Chelsea Yancey: The baby takes what it needs and you get what's left. LOL I wouldnt be worried as long as you're making good choices about what you're eating, getting enough water, and taking your vitamins. I'm sure the baby is getting what it needs. If you were losing a lot of weight or felt unwell then maybe it would be something to worry about.
Kami Walker: and you are doing a great job! excited for you becoming a mom!
Martha Mooney Granger: you are doubly blessed with the baby and Nathan!
Shauna Baang: Emily I hope things get better for you soon so you can enjoy your pregnancy. The first time I was pregnant it took forever before I started showing and I also lost weight in the beginning! Hang in there and I am sure it will get better and enjoy not showing while you can cause once you do you will find all kinds of people giving you advice whether you want it or not!

Super Blessed

October 4, 2013

Feeling super blessed. Nathan Rusch came home last night after I had fallen asleep in my clothes, cleared off the bed, snuggled up to me and gave me the sweetest kiss on the forehead. Then this morning, before leaving for school, he crawled back in bed with me just to give me a little more snuggle time before leaving. This is how we make use of the little time we have together now. We knew this year of our lives was going to be really challenging but I'm so glad we can cherish the few moments we have together.

14 Weeks Update

September 29, 2013
14 weeks! It has been a crazy week. In addition to the stats given before, my vomit count increased by 8, doctor visits by 1, iv fluids by 500(some unit), lost 2 pounds and gained one yucky cough. I know, I know, I know that it will all be worth it but I don't think it's wrong to say I hated being pregnant this week. I am so looking forward to being able to feel the baby kick and find out the gender early November. I think pregnancy will be a bit more fun then. Thank you so much for all the prayers and to the wonderful people who gave me gifts this week. And I know you wish your bathroom was as cool as mine... Lol.

Hannah Granger: What a fab phone case you have there! 😊
Jessica Snider: I don't think I know anyone who loves their first trimester...pregnancy is worth it, but it is hard and uncomfortable....feeling the baby kick and finding out the gender are the best parts of pregnancy. Hang in there
